HARALABOS [HARRY] STAFYLAKIS
JUNO-nominated composer Haralabos [Harry] Stafylakis has developed a distinctive musical language rooted in contemporary classical music and progressive metal, bringing the large-scale architecture, rhythmic drive, and visceral energy of metal into the concert hall. His music has been performed by orchestras including the Toronto and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras and Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and he served as Composer-in-Residence of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Co-Curator of the Winnipeg New Music Festival from 2016–2026.
Stafylakis has collaborated with artists as varied as Dame Evelyn Glennie, Animals As Leaders, Rachel Barton Pine, Roomful of Teeth, and JACK Quartet. His 2023 album Calibrating Friction (New Amsterdam Records) was nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2024 JUNO Awards, featuring Stafylakis on guitars. In 2026, he and vocalist-composer Courtney Swain released dontwaitforme, an EP fusing progressive metal and chamber music.
